i love it for deathmatch, people hear that fuse, and will jump off of damned near anything to avoid the cannonball...

Okay, I can't make any promises, but if I get some free time, I'll write a quick patch that lets you move with the cannon in single player. Do you think you should be able to move at full speed, half speed, or the slow speed you go in DM with equipment weight enabled?
