Geography

Most records have been lost in the ravage of time and war. The best that most have been able to determine from old records is that Arcadia is located in the American southwest, somewhere inside the withered borders of Arizona. Most of it predates the war, and the inhabitants and Corporations simply built upon what was already there. It sits in the evening shadow of a plateau which borders it on the west and south.

Around the city, on the very edges of whatever protective force keeps the deadly radiation away, is a wall built by the city's citizens years ago, some believe soon after the war. It helps keep fresh in everyone's mind the limited range of the safe zone. Most likely, its original intent was to keep at bay the dangerous predators of the wasteland (human or otherwise). Gates at the north and southeast edges correspond with the elevated highway that forks and encircles the city.

Beside the northern gate sits the Renfield Fusion Plant, built in 2033 to provide the pre-war city with all the electricity it could need. The plant was brought back online during Larkin's reign, and is now managed by the City Council. Most, but not all, of the city remains wired with more than enough power available for the citizens to use. Not far from there, to the east, is the water treatment plant. It recycles the used city water, supplementing it with well water drawn deep from the ground.

South of the treatment plant is the city's prison. Conditions, not surprisingly, are horrid. In this north end of Arcadia, neighborhoods are mostly warehousess, many abandoned and used by squatters and local gangs. As you move south, into the heart of the city, office buildings and skyscrapers become more common. Beside the old community college sits the government block, from where the Corporations run Arcadia. Eastward from here is the old industrial section of the city. Many of the factories sit in disuse because Corps keep their most vital manufacturing plants and refineries on within the heavily guarded walls of their compounds. However, the majority are up and running, providing necessary to jobs to a large number of Arcadia's citzens.

In the very center of Arcadia sits Amman Grey Park, a name lost in time. It is still kept relatively clean and well-maintained, one of the few locales where residents can still see greenery (most work on it is actually done by idealist volunteers). Turning south, the neighborhoods grow gradually seedier. Bars, brothels, and gambling are all common here in Arcadia's southeast corner. This is also where the old flea market has transformed into a sprawling bazaar where anything and everything is bought and sold at all times of the day.

Underground, intertwined with the city's sewage system, are numerous greenhouses and hydroponic gardens that act as Arcadia's main food supply. Because of the lack of available space and the ashen sky's dim light, these gardens made the most sense underground, with artificial lighting and lines from the sewer system for fertilization. Though not all Corporate owned (Corps also have their own such nurseries), these gardens are owned by city permit only, so they tend to be owned either by the well-connected or Corporations in fact if not in name.

Last, but not least, are the Corporate compounds. Thick walls, heavy with security guards and armed positions surround each organization's headquarters. These six compounds can be found scattered around the outer rim of the city. Corporate employees and their families often live within these walls. In fact, since the building of these compounds, most Corporate employees have never even left the grounds of their respective companies. The walls also house the refineries and factories that allow the Corps to give form to their technologies. Vehicles, electronics, guns, ammunition, and other goods are all made or repaired in these facilities. Whatever isn't needed is sold to Corporate fronts out on the streets.
