[1.1] What Is A Roleplaying System?

If you have to ask, I'm wondering why you're even reading this. You don't know what a roleplaying system is? Ever heard of Dungeons & Dragons? That's a roleplaying system. Maybe you should go try that out first...

A roleplaying system is a set of rules that let you create characters and define how they interact with the world around them. The definition is really quite as simple as that. Of course, the system itself can be very complex, which leads to difficulty remembering all of the rules. A simple system, though, can be too vague and call for a Game Master to often make decisions on situations not covered by the existing rules. The key is to reach a happy medium that also (hopefully) provides enough realism and fun to make the game worthwhile.

A roleplaying game (RPG) is more or less a roleplaying system with a theme, setting, and whole world defined. The system itself can be separate from any one setting, as RPS-Squared is, which is why I call it a Roleplaying System, instead of a Roleplaying Game. For the most part, RPS-Squared is geared towards a contemporary or futuristic setting, but is certainly not limited to that.
