[4.2] Actions

An action can be running, diving for cover, firing a gun, swinging a weapon, anything that the Game Director determines is quick enough to fit in a 3 second combat round. The one restriction is that you must be able to perform the actions completely simultaneously. You cannot load a weapon and fire it in the same round, since each of those is a separate operation, one that must follow the other. The only exception to this is if two things can be completed one right after the other within the alloted time period of 3 seconds, in which case the two items are considered a single action. Some examples of this would be a "running jump", "draw and fire" (with the Quickdraw skill), or making more than one attack with the same weapon (up to its maximum Rate). Even though in each example more than one distinctly different step is being done, they are each considered a single action.

The following are some of the most common actions performed in a combat round:

Move: A person can move a certain number of meters each round, depending upon their mode of travel (each of which has certain penalties). A character, in a single round, can walk up to 10 meters. They can jog up to a number of meters equal to their Athletics attribute plus their Running skill plus 10 per round, or sprint as much as 30+Athletics+Running meters. Driving or piloting a vehicle also covers an action, though the speed is dependent upon the type of vehicle being driven.

Dodge: Dodging is really a specialized type of movement. When a characters dodges, he or she is zig-zagging back and forth, leaping, running, and rolling in random directions to avoid being hit by something (or someone). The end result is that the character moves 20 meters in any direction and is harder to hit, but suffers severe penalties on any other action performed at the same time.

Draw Weapon: Allows a weapon to be brought into play to be used next round. Unless the Quickdraw skill is used, you cannot draw a weapon and use it in the same round.

Load Weapon: Eject an empty magazine, spent shells, or drained power source from a weapon, and then replace them. For those weapons that load a single bullet at a time, 3 cartridges can be loaded per combat round (unless a mechanical aid is used, such as a speed-loader). This procedure generally requires two hands.

Load Magazine: 3 cartridges can be loaded into a magazine each combat round. Loading a magazine requires both hands.

Attack: Perform a ranged or physical assault upon an opponent.

Other Actions: Any maneuver that can fit within a span of 3 seconds can be considered a single Action. Even a series of linear steps can be consolidated into one Action if the time it takes to complete all of them is 3 seconds or less, and each step follows one right after the other. A feat that takes longer than 3 seconds will have to be split up among multiple combat rounds. Each round it will be nearer and nearer to completion, until it is finished.
